Avoid walking on new sod for the first two weeks if possible, and keep pets and children off the lawn during this time. After two weeks, when the sod has begun to root, you can walk on it for short periods to check for dry spots or other issues. You will know the sod is establishing when it becomes difficult to lift the edges, indicating roots have grown into the soil below. At this point, you can begin to reduce watering frequency gradually, moving from daily to every other day, then to every third day over the course of several weeks.

Mowing can begin once the grass reaches about 3 to 4 inches tall, typically 2 to 3 weeks after installation. Make sure your mower blade is sharp to avoid pulling or tearing the grass, which could damage developing roots. Remove only the top one-third of the grass height with each mowing. After about 6 weeks, when the sod is fully established, you can begin treating it like a mature lawn with your normal lawn care routine including regular mowing, fertilizing, and seasonal maintenance.
